As an experienced air conditioning and plumbing service provider, we know as well as anyone that things aren't always as they seem. Despite so many parts to a single air conditioning system, all you see is the condenser unit--the box sitting outside your house. And yet, problems with your AC system most likely originate from any of the dozen-odd other parts.
The same goes for what may seem like common sense when it comes to the timing of AC maintenance. For many, spring is the obvious choice for AC maintenance. It's right before summer, just in time to make sure the air conditioning system is working before the days get long and hot and muggy.
However, our experience tells you that it's just the opposite! Late summer, in the latter days of September or the early days of October, is by far the best time to get your AC maintenance done--and here are the top three reasons why.
Your AC unit has just gone through quite a workout
By the end of summer, your AC system has just completed a marathon, working and sweating for months on end to keep your home cool. When we watch marathon runners finish a race, do we see them wait several months to begin repairing the damage done to their legs and central nervous systems?
Of course not! The best time to heal is in the moments immediately after the marathon. The same goes for an AC system. AC maintenance performed just at summer's end gives your system the best chance for recovery, before the months turn cold, windy, and precipitous--when a number of elements can do further damage to your system.
AC maintenance is scheduled in advance: don't get caught scheduling late
There is a weeks-long gap between the time you make the decision for AC maintenance, and the time the AC maintenance is actually provided. If you wait until the late spring, you might just get caught suffering the first few weeks of intense heat without a properly functioning air conditioning system.
Furthermore, if you wait until the winter or early spring months, when it's still cold, windy, and precipitous, the elements might not allow for a full repair of your AC system. Lines freeze, wetness can get in the way of working on circuits, and foliage, dirt, and wind-driven dust prevent a full inspection.
By scheduling your AC maintenance appointment for late summer, you're ensuring that your air conditioning system is prepared well in advance of next summer, and that the weather will be much more cooperative.
Your AC unit's condenser is sensitive to the elements
This reason for late summer AC maintenance is a little more specific--but no less important.
Your air conditioning unit's condenser is sensitive to the elements. This makes summer the safest time for AC maintenance, as it is less likely to be exposed to any harmful weather.
However, you can't have your AC system unplugged and checked during the mid-summer months, as it will quickly get too hot in your home. By late summer, as temperatures cool into the 70s, or lower, we can safely unplug the system and check the condenser. Additionally, it's the perfect time to check, as it's just gone through a whole winter and spring of rough weather, and then summer of workouts.
